How we work: Auditory Brain Stimulation, according to the authentic Tomatis principles.

It all starts with a psychological listening test, performed with an audiometer calibrated for Auditory Brain Stimulation. This test reveals the person's neurological, psychological, educational and physiological abilities. From there, we draw up an individual therapy plan, which is discussed in detail with the child's parents or the adult client.  Specifically, the test is performed via headphones with air and bone conduction placed on the person's head. The air conduction (blue line) represents how we perceive the outside world and the bone conduction (red line) how we perceive ourselves. In an ideal listening test, these two lines are close together. The aim of the method is to replicate this situation. Special electronic equipment is used to transmit sounds to the client, such as (un-filtered and filtered) music of Mozart, Gregorian chant, or the highly filtered voice of the subject's mother. These sounds need to be altered in order to create a listening training: high and low frequencies are alternately amplified and attenuated. High frequencies activate the auditory nerve (cochlear system), while low frequencies work on the vestibular system. Each frequency corresponds to a specific area in the brain. By irregularly alternating the relaxation and activation channels, new connections are created in the brain. At the same time, existing connections improve.

This principle is further explained in the section "Phases" >>>

The goals of the Tomatis therapy are

  • to train auditory processing

  • to improve perception

  • to stimulate motor skills

  • to increase concentration

  • to improve speech

  • to strengthen self-awareness

  • to modify the behavior

  • to give energy

  • to regulate the vegetative balance

  • to support recovery

  • to optimize residual hearing

  • to facilitate foreign language learning

In order to achieve these goals, a personalized program is designed according to the client's problems. Usually, we reproduce the early stages of auditory development, during which most hearing disorders occur. The role played by the Brain Activator is very important: It needs to process Mozart music, Gregorian chant, or the mother's voice, in a way that stimulates the brain and positively activates the neural networks. Then, new ways of hearing and new patterns of communication and behavior can emerge.
It has been shown that the most efficient way to do the listening training is away from everyday life and in a peaceful environment. Intensive listening sessions, interspersed with multiple resting phases, work best to ensure the success of the therapy.
